Storing hardneck garlic bulbs properly ensures they stay fresh and flavorful for months. Here’s a guide to help:
1. Cure the Garlic
- After harvesting, brush off any excess soil (don’t wash them).
- Place the bulbs in a dry, airy, and shaded location for about 2-4 weeks.
- Let them cure until the outer layers are papery and the roots and stems are completely dry.
2. Trim and Clean
- Cut the stems down to about an inch above the bulb.
- Trim the roots to remove excess dirt.
- Remove any loose outer layers, but avoid peeling too many as they help protect the bulb.
3. Store in a Cool, Dark, and Dry Place
- Place cured bulbs in a well-ventilated container like a mesh bag, basket, or paper bag.
- Store at temperatures around 50-60°F (10-15°C) with low humidity to prevent mold and rot.
- Avoid refrigerating, as it can trigger sprouting. Although, some varieties we have stored up to 6 months in the fridge.
4. Check Regularly
- Inspect the bulbs occasionally and remove any that show signs of mold or are squishy.
- Viable garlic seed should be plump and hard to the touch.
With these steps, hardneck garlic can stay fresh for several months, even up to six months if stored properly.
