Garlic Bloat Nematode Test

Garlic Bloat Nematode test came back negative for 2025.  We try to get testing done every two years.  We rotate growing our garlic in the same beds every 3 years.  This helps prevent damaging insects from settling in and eating on the garlic bulbs.

Garlic Bloat Nematode (Ditylenchus dipsaci)

Garlic Bloat Nematode (GBN) is a microscopic roundworm that attacks garlic, onions, leeks, chives, and other allium crops. Known scientifically as Ditylenchus dipsaci, this pest can cause severe yield losses and is difficult to manage once established in soil or planting stock. Early identification and prevention are key to protecting your garlic crop.


What Is Garlic Bloat Nematode?

Garlic Bloat Nematode is a stem and bulb nematode that feeds inside garlic tissues. Unlike beneficial soil nematodes, these are destructive parasites. They invade leaves, stems, and bulbs, causing swelling, distortion, and rotting. Once introduced, they can survive in soil and plant debris for several years.


Symptoms of Infestation

Above-ground symptoms may resemble nutrient deficiency or fungal disease, making diagnosis tricky. Common signs include:

  • Stunted, yellowing, or twisted leaves
  • Swollen or split stems
  • Plants collapsing prematurely

Bulb symptoms are more distinctive:

  • Soft, spongy cloves that shrink when dried
  • Dark brown or gray discoloration
  • Poor storage quality with rapid breakdown

Severely infected bulbs are unmarketable.


How Garlic Bloat Nematode Spreads

  • Infested seed garlic: The most common source.
  • Soil and plant debris: Nematodes can persist 3–5 years without a host.
  • Water movement: Irrigation or rainfall can carry nematodes.
  • Equipment and handling: Tools, storage bins, and workers’ hands may spread them between fields.

Management and Control

Because there is no simple cure, management relies on prevention and integrated strategies.

1. Use Clean Planting Stock

  • Plant certified nematode-free garlic seed.
  • Avoid replanting bulbs from fields with known infestations.

2. Crop Rotation

  • Rotate garlic and onions out of infected ground for at least 4–5 years.
  • Grow non-host crops (corn, brassicas, lettuce) during rotation to reduce populations.

3. Hot Water Treatment

  • Bulbs may be soaked in hot water (typically around 49–50°C / 120°F for 20 minutes) to kill nematodes before planting【u.osu.edu†source】.
  • Must be done carefully: overheating damages garlic, underheating fails to kill nematodes.

4. Sanitation

  • Clean tools, crates, and handling equipment.
  • Destroy infected plant material – do not compost.

5. Soil & Diagnostic Testing

  • If symptoms are suspected, submit bulbs and soil samples to a diagnostic lab (universities or state agriculture labs).
  • Testing confirms presence and guides future planting decisions.

Why Garlic Bloat Nematode Matters

  • Yield loss: Even low populations reduce bulb size and market value.
  • Persistence: Once established, it is very hard to eliminate.
  • Quarantine risk: In some regions, garlic bloat nematode is a regulated pest; infested shipments may be restricted.

The most effective protection is keeping the nematode out of your farm or garden. Always start with clean seed, maintain long crop rotations, and monitor fields regularly. With vigilance, growers can reduce the risk of this devastating pest.
